Often defects in photovoltaic panels result in so-called 'hotspots'. These spots indicate the recombination of electrons, which can create holes in solar cells. A significant amount of energy is released during this process and radiates into space as heat. Cells can heat up to high temperatures - in fact, the difference between a good cell and a defective one can be more than 50°C. This heat can cause irreversible damage to the entire panel. In addition, the whole installation generates much less power because the rest of the good cells reduce the power to a minimum - that is, to the value generated by the weakest, faulty panel.

Hot spots are clearly visible in thermal images because they have an extremely strong colour contrast with other solar cells and the surrounding environment. However, in many cases, carrying out inspections with a hand-held thermal camera is neither efficient nor safe. Photovoltaic panels are often installed on sloping roofs with poor accessibility and solar power plants are of considerable size. In addition, natural obstacles such as vegetation and uneven terrain often make it impossible to manoeuvre between panels.|
